What is the ruling on brown discharges that appear after the cessation of postpartum bleeding (nifas) and purification, and must one fast, pray, and engage in marital relations during these days or not?

Scholars have differed regarding a woman seeing yellowish or brownish discharge after purification from post-natal bleeding (nifas) and within the forty-day period. The apparent view of Ibn Baz is that it takes the ruling of nifas, whereas Ibn Uthaymeen preferred the view that it is not considered nifas. He stated that the woman should perform ghusl and pray, and not refrain from prayer even if she sees brownish or yellowish discharge, basing his argument on the hadith of Umm Atiyyah: "We did not consider the yellowish or brownish discharge to be anything." It is permissible to adopt either of the two opinions, but it is more cautious to make up the fasting days for those days.
