Is it true that the Prophet, may God's prayers and peace be upon him, was afflicted by magic for a full year?

It is authentically established in the Sahihayn (Bukhari and Muslim) that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was afflicted by magic from Labid ibn al-A'sam. The duration of the magic ranged between forty days and six months. The two narrations have been reconciled by stating that the total duration of the affliction was six months, while the direct effect lasted forty days. The magic occurred in Dhul-Hijjah or Muharram of the seventh year of Hijra. A narration by Ibn Sa'd indicates that the Jews paid the sorcerer three dinars to cast magic upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. There is no reliable statement indicating that the duration of the magic exceeded six months.
