When was the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, bewitched? Did sorcery affect the revelation? And what is the truth concerning the sorcerer’s lineage?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was afflicted by magic after his return from Hudaybiyyah in the seventh year [of the Hijra], meaning before the full revelation of the Qur’an was complete. Scholars have addressed the effect of magic on revelation by explaining that magic only affects his physical body, peace and blessings be upon him, and the outward functions of his limbs, not his intellect, heart, or belief. The meaning of his statement in the hadith, "until he would imagine that he had approached his wives while he had not," is that he would perceive, from his usual vigor and prior habit, the ability to approach them. However, when he drew near to them, he would be overcome by the magic and would not approach them. As for Labid ibn al-A'sam, he was an ally of Banu Zuraiq and attributed to them. It has been said that he was a Jew, or a hypocrite, or that he feigned Islam. It is probable that he was called a Jew because he was among their allies, not because he followed their religion.
