Cosmetic procedures are permissible to remove a defect or restore an organ to its natural form, even if the defect is congenital, such as a cleft lip or a crooked nose. This includes considerable psychological harm. This permissibility is based on restricting the prohibition of altering creation to that which is "for beauty," and on the exception of alteration for the sake of an "illness" in the sacred texts, as well as the general objectives of Sharia in repelling harm. The use of anesthesia is permissible out of necessity.
