What should be done regarding a wife who embraced Islam upon marriage and recently agreed to return to Islam, but refused the hijab and requested not to be spoken to about religion?

If your wife pronounces the Two Testimonies of Faith and performs the prayer, then she is a Muslim. However, if she commits an act of disbelief thereafter, such as denying the obligation of the hijab while knowing it is obligatory, or completely abandoning prayer, or losing her desire for Islam, then she is an apostate. In the case of her apostasy, if she repents before the expiry of her iddah (waiting period), she remains your wife. Otherwise, she is irrevocably separated from you upon the expiry of the iddah, and she can only return to you through a new marriage contract after embracing Islam. It is not permissible for you to have intercourse with her before she returns to Islam, nor is it permissible for a Muslim to keep a disbelieving woman under his marital bond, for Allah Almighty says: (وَلا تُمْسِكُوا بِعِصَمِ الْكَوَافِرِ) "and do not hold on to the bonds of disbelieving women." You should invite her [to Islam] and be gentle in your call. If she embraces Islam and her Islam is good, then keep her. If she insists on apostasy, or does not maintain prayer and hijab, then we advise you to divorce her.
