The answer

In the linguistic sense, the Salaf are those who came before. However, in the شرعي (Shar'i) or legal-religious sense, they are the Companions, the Tabi'un (Successors), and their followers, known for their leadership and great stature in religion, excluding the people of innovation (Ahl al-Bid'a). If the Salaf agree on a matter of creed, then it is the truth, which can only be correct. Their methodology is that which is indicated by the texts of the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and sound reason.
