Does the reward for reciting the Quran pertain to what is pronounced, or to the Quranic orthography, taking into consideration the extra or missing letters in the orthography?

It appears that the reward is connected to what is recited and read, even if it is not formally written. The reader receives the reward of ten good deeds for reading a single letter, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a good deed for it, and a good deed is multiplied tenfold. I do not say that 'Alif-Lam-Mim' is one letter, but rather 'Alif' is a letter, 'Lam' is a letter, and 'Mim' is a letter." The "letter" here refers to a simple, individual letter, not a word.
