Is it permissible for a poor young man to marry a wealthy woman, and is wealth a prerequisite for marriage in Islam, and what should he do if the father refuses due to his poverty, and would the marriage then be considered an act of disobedience?
The preponderant opinion is that the compatibility (kafa'ah) considered in marriage is based solely on character and religious commitment, as Allah Almighty says: "Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you," and as Allah Almighty says: "The believers are but brothers," and as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "All of you are children of Adam, and Adam was created from dust."
However, given the weakness of religious commitment in these times, a man is advised not to marry someone who is superior to him in worldly matters, whether financial or social; because that may lead to her or her family's arrogance towards him, which would affect the stability of the marital life.
As for the marriage of a poor man, if he is able to bear the expenses of marriage, such as sustenance and housing, then there is no harm in it. But if he is destitute and unable to bear the burdens of marriage, then marriage is not recommended for him, and it may even be prohibited if it harms the woman.
If the girl's father refuses this marriage, you cannot marry her because there is no marriage without a guardian (wali).
