Was Iblis one of the angels or one of the jinn, and are the jinn a type of angel?

The interpretation of the verse: "He was of the jinn and so he disobeyed the command of his Lord" (18:50) clarifies that the reason for Iblis's disobedience (fisq) was that he was from the jinn. The letter "fa" (ف) here indicates causation (ta'leel), and this description distinguishes him from the angels who complied with the command. A group of scholars held that Iblis was not originally an angel but rather from the jinn, and he worshipped alongside them. The argument for this view is that angels are infallible and protected from disbelief (kufr), and the Quran explicitly states that he was from the jinn. Among those who affirmed this was Al-Hasan Al-Basri.

In contrast, the majority of scholars stated that he was from the angels, and this was the view chosen by Al-Tabari. What exegetes mention from the Salaf (early Muslims) that he was among the noblest of angels is all from the Isra'iliyyat (Judeo-Christian traditions) which cannot be relied upon. The preponderant view is that he was not an angel, based on the apparent meaning of the noble verse.
