The answer

Scholars have differed on whether Iblis was an angel or not, and there are two opinions:

- The first opinion: That he was one of the angels. This is the view of Ibn Abbas, Ibn Mas'ud, and most exegetes. Their evidence is that Allah commanded him to prostrate along with the angels. Had he not been one of them, the command would not have been directed to him, nor would he have deserved punishment.

- The second opinion: That he was from the Jinn and not from the angels. This is a narration from Ibn Abbas, and the view of Al-Hasan and Qatadah. Their evidence is Allah's saying: "Except Iblis, he was of the Jinn, so he disobeyed the command of his Lord." [Quran 18:50] And that he was created from fire and has offspring, unlike the angels. He was included in the command to prostrate because of his resemblance to the angels in worship.
