If a husband beats his wife severely or without cause, he is an oppressor and an abuser. She has the right to refer his case to the Sharia judge for reprimand, or to request a divorce due to harm. The wife is advised to examine herself; if she has been remiss in her husband's rights, she should rectify it and live with him amicably, and advise him gently. If he persists in his abuse, she should weigh the harm of divorce against the harm of staying, and choose the lesser of the two harms, while frequently supplicating and relying on Allah.
