Is it permissible to seek divorce from a husband who physically abuses his wife, verbally assaults her, and does not fulfill his promises of change, despite the family's attempts to encourage the continuation of the marriage?

A husband should treat his wife with kindness and benevolence, and he should know that he is a guardian and responsible for his flock, and that "the best among you are those who are best to their families." Severely beating one's wife is a dereliction of trust. A husband should fear Allah and not justify his bad actions by his circumstances. A Muslim should be patient and persistent in supplication, for Allah is the dispeller of worries. A woman is permitted to seek divorce (khul') from a ill-mannered husband, for staying honorably in her parents' home is better than living with a husband who harms her, unless she fears fitnah (strife or temptation). Otherwise, enduring a husband's harm is easier than Allah's punishment.
