Is a man who had intercourse with his wife during the daytime in Ramadan while he was traveling required to make up the fast and offer expiation by feeding, and is expiation binding upon his wife if she was not coerced?

Sexual intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan necessitates the major expiation (kaffarah kubra) in sequential order: freeing a slave, then fasting for two consecutive months, then feeding sixty poor persons, based on the hadith of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). The ruling varies depending on the circumstances of the intercourse:

1. If a man arrives as a traveler during the daytime in Ramadan while he is not fasting, and then has intercourse with his wife: there is no expiation upon him, and he only needs to make up that day.

2. If he arrives as a traveler during the daytime in Ramadan while he is fasting, and then intentionally has intercourse with his wife: the major expiation is obligatory upon him along with making up the day, according to the majority of scholars.

3. If he arrives at night and then intentionally has intercourse with his wife during the daytime: the expiation is obligatory upon him along with making up the day, without any disagreement.

The wife is not required to offer expiation according to the most preponderant opinion, and she must repent and make up the day.
