Spouses are religiously obligated to treat each other with kindness and to know and fulfill their rights, as Allah Almighty says: "And due to them is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable." If the wife is bewitched, the husband should make excuses for her. However, if she leaves or abandons her husband knowingly and without a legitimate reason, she is disobedient (nashiz), and the remedy for a disobedient wife is outlined in Islamic law. She is not permitted to request a divorce except for a legitimate reason. No one has the right to prevent the husband from speaking with his wife or to sow discord between them. It is advisable to seek the judgment of wise individuals from his family and her family, as Allah Almighty says: "And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause success between them." This should be done with the help of supplication.
