Is breaking the fast with an odd number of dates a Sunnah from the Prophet (peace be upon him), and is eating an odd number of dates a Sunnah in Ramadan or otherwise?
It has not been authentically reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, deliberately ate an odd number of dates except before the Eid al-Fitr prayer and by eating seven Ajwa dates in the morning. As for breaking the fast, it is established that he broke his fast with fresh dates (rutab) or dried dates (tamr) without specifying a number or an odd number. Some scholars have inferred from the general hadith, "Indeed, Allah is Witr (One) and loves witr (odd numbers)," the desirability of eating and drinking in odd numbers, while others have held the view of restricting it to what is explicitly mentioned in the text. The matter is broad in this regard.
