What is the ruling on combining two dates in one bite?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade a man from eating two dates at once (قران) unless he sought permission from his companions. This prohibition is further emphasized if the food is scarce and the need for it is great. Scholars have differed regarding the mention of seeking permission in the hadith, but the preponderant view is that it is authentic, both as a Marfu' (attributed directly to the Prophet) and a Mawquf (attributed to a Companion). The prohibition in the hadith is interpreted by the majority of scholars as a recommendation (makruh) due to its being a breach of etiquette and noble character. Al-Haytami interpreted the prohibition as applying to situations where eating two dates at once is considered disgraceful for the person and indicative of their rashness in eating.
