Is it a sin to reject a suitor because of his appearance or financial status?
The basis for choosing a husband is his religious commitment (deen) and character (khuluq). However, there is no sin upon a woman if she refuses to marry someone whose appearance or financial status does not appeal to her. Nevertheless, it is forbidden to mock or belittle a suitor in front of others because of his appearance or poverty, as this constitutes backbiting (gheebah), which is prohibited. This sin might be a reason for the woman to be deprived of marriage, so she must repent to Allah and ask Him for success.
