What is the ruling on using intercession (wasta) for employment or admission to schools?

Intercession for a job is forbidden if it leads to depriving someone who is more deserving and qualified in terms of academic competence. This is considered an injustice to those who are deserving, to the authorities, and to the nation, and it engenders resentment and corruption. However, if it does not lead to the loss of a right, then it is permissible and even encouraged by Islamic law, and the intercessor will be rewarded for it, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Intercede, and you will be rewarded."

Mediation in schools, institutes, and universities is prohibited if it leads to depriving someone who is more deserving in terms of eligibility, age, or precedence, because that entails injustice to others and corruption for society.
