What are the rights of neighbors?

The neighbor holds a great status in Islam. Gabriel (peace be upon him) enjoined the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) concerning the neighbor so much so that he thought he would make him an heir. He who does not secure his neighbor from his mischief is not a believer. Islam has urged kindness to neighbors. So, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbor; rather, he should be kind and honorable to him. Even with a disbelieving neighbor, one must be kind to him. The neighbor has many rights, including preserving his sanctity, initiating greetings with him, visiting him when he is sick, advising him, offering condolences during misfortune, sharing in his joys, comforting him in times of need, and showing him honor and favor.
