Who is a neighbor according to Islamic law? Is it someone who lives nearby, or is it everyone who lives in the neighborhood?

The Sharia has emphasized the right of the neighbor through exhortation and benevolence towards him. Scholars have differed in defining who a neighbor is; some have held that it is limited to forty houses from every direction, while others have said it is only the immediate adjacent one. Other opinions have been reported, such as the people of the neighborhood or the mosque. Some scholars are of the view that there is no specific limit for a neighbor, but rather it refers to what is customarily known. This is the view preferred by Al-Mardawi, Ibn Uthaymin, and Al-Albani, due to the unauthenticity of the Hadiths that define neighborliness as forty houses.
