Is a nursing infant required to wear the ihram during the performance of Umrah?
An infant is not obligated by the rulings of Sharia. The guardian performs the acts of Umrah on his behalf. So, he removes the child's ordinary clothes and dresses him in pure, unstitched garments, and keeps him away from the prohibitions of Ihram. The guardian makes the intention of Ihram on his behalf and recites the Talbiyah for him. Thus, the boy becomes a Muhrim (in a state of Ihram) and is prohibited from what an adult Muhrim is prohibited from. It is recommended that the boy be pure in his clothes and body during the circumambulation (Tawaf).
