Is it obligatory to fast only the remaining day, or to fast three more days as expiation for the oath, given the inability to feed ten needy people and the inability to remember the number of times one has sworn?

Scholars have differed regarding the obligation of consecutive fasting in expiation for an oath. The majority view its obligation unless there is an excuse, while others hold it to be merely recommended. If a person swears multiple oaths regarding a single matter and then breaks them, only one expiation is required, unless he expiated for the first oath and then swore again. However, if the oaths were regarding different actions, then an expiation is due for each oath. The expiation must not precede the cause of its obligation. So, if a person fasts two out of three days as an expiation and then breaks other oaths, these days do not count as a complete expiation for the subsequent oaths. Rather, he must fast three new days for all the oaths, or complete the first expiation and then expiate for the subsequent oaths with another expiation.
