What are the conditions for wiping over leather socks (khuffayn) and regular socks (jawrabayn), and what is the ruling on it?

Wiping over the khuffayn (leather socks) and jawrabayn (regular socks) is authentically established from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and this is the practice among the people of knowledge. This is authentically narrated in the Two Sahihs from Jarir and Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, and in Al-Musnad and the Sunan from Safwan ibn Assal. Imam An-Nawawi and Al-Hafiz have mentioned that wiping over the khuffayn is mutawatir (narrated by such a large number of people that it is impossible they all conspired to fabricate it).

For wiping over the khuffayn and jawrabayn to be permissible, certain conditions must be met: wearing them after a complete state of ritual purity, their covering the obligatory area (the feet up to the ankles), the possibility of walking in them, their being permissible and ritually pure in substance, and their being thick (safiqqayn - so that the skin of the foot cannot be seen through them). However, some scholars, like Ibn Taymiyyah, consider wiping permissible even if the skin can be seen through them.

If the conditions are met, a resident may wipe for one day and one night, and a traveler for three days and their nights. The manner of wiping is to lightly wipe the top surface of the khuffayn or jawrabayn, and not their bottom, once.
