What is the sufficient manner of wiping over the khuffayn (leather socks)? Is it required that the hand be completely wet, or is it permissible to shake off excess water from it before wiping? Is it obligatory to spread the fingers during wiping? And what is the ruling for one who did not wipe in this manner out of ignorance, and is he required to repeat the prayers?

Scholars have differed regarding the obligatory extent of wiping over the khuffayn (leather socks). The Shafi'is hold that wiping is sufficient with the minimum that can be called 'wiping', while the Hanbalis stipulate wiping over most of the top surface of the khuff. The prescribed method is to wipe with a wet hand, not by pouring water over the khuff. Wiping is permissible in any manner, as long as the objective of wiping over most of the top surface of the khuff is achieved. It is disliked to wash the khuff or to repeat wiping over it.
