What should a 22-year-old religious girl do with her mother who describes herself as a "failed mother" and contributes to her feelings of frustration and lack of self-confidence, as she mocks her, taunts her with past actions, and calls her vulgar names, which sometimes leads her to lash out at her despite her desire to honor her parents?

The greatest acts of drawing closer to Allah are dutifulness to one's mother and striving for her satisfaction, even if she treats one poorly, because Allah Almighty says: "And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship" (Al-Ahqaf: 15), and "And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him with hardship upon hardship, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness" (Luqman: 14-15).

A man once came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and asked him: "Who among the people is most deserving of my good companionship?" He said: "Your mother." The man asked: "Then who?" He said: "Your mother." The man asked: "Then who?" He said: "Your mother." The man asked: "Then who?" He said: "Your father."

A mother's ill-treatment or mockery of the hijab does not justify treating her poorly. Rather, one must advise her gently, admonish her kindly, and treat her with excellence, because Allah Almighty says: "Repel [evil] with that which is better; then abruptly the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend" (Fussilat: 34). So how much more so for a mother, who is the most merciful of people? It is possible that something you did caused her to take this stance, and you must correct your mistake, repent, and apologize.
