The question

What is the expiation for intentionally having intercourse with one's wife during the daytime in Ramadan ten years ago, and repeating this act on most days of that month, while also not completing the fast of that month? Does the expiation also apply to the wife, knowing the difficulty of fasting due to field work?

The answer

Sincere repentance ( Nasuh) is obligatory for sexual intercourse during the daytime in . An expiation () is required for each day on which intercourse occurred, which is: fasting for two consecutive months, or feeding sixty needy persons if unable to fast. Some scholars hold that one expiation suffices for all the days, but the more cautious opinion is the first one. The expiation is binding for the days on which intercourse is certain, and all the broken fasts must be made up (Qada'). There is a difference of opinion regarding the obligation of expiation for the wife who willingly participates.
