What is the ruling on reading the Qur’an in the house of the deceased and in the graveyard during burial until its completion?

Scholars have differed regarding whether the reward for reciting the Quran reaches the deceased. The majority (Jumhur (definition)) hold that it does, basing their argument on Allah's saying: (And those who came after them say, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brethren who preceded us in faith"). They analogized the recitation of the Quran to charity, which reaches the deceased. As for Allah's saying: (And that there is not for man except that for which he strives), it refers to what a person strives for himself, and does not preclude the reward of others reaching him, as evidenced by the reaching of the reward for Hajj, charity, and supplication. There is no specific time or place required for recitation. However, the gathering of people in the deceased's home to recite the Quran and perform a "khatmah" (completion of the Quran) is impermissible and an innovation. What is authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is praying over the deceased and supplicating for them. Likewise, reciting the Quran at the grave during burial has no evidence. Goodness lies in following what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did, for he said: "Whoever performs an action which is not in accordance with our matter, it will be rejected."
