What is the authenticity of attributing the noble verse: "Allah knew that you were deceiving yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you" to disparage Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and portray him as a traitor, and what is the refutation against those who claim that this verse describes him as such and that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) showed favoritism to his companions?

The verse (Al-Baqarah: 187) that speaks of Allah’s forgiveness and pardon for one who had intercourse with his wife at night after sleeping in Ramadan indicates no blame, and he who repents from a sin is like one who has no sin. Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, did not have intercourse with his wife believing she was asleep; rather, he thought she was feigning illness. One must think well of the Companions and only mention them in the best light. This is particularly emphasized concerning the Rightly Guided Caliphs, whom the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded us to emulate.
