Is there a narration reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to the effect that a man said: "I hate the truth, love tribulation, pray without ablution, and possess what Allah does not possess," whereupon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, understood it with a specific interpretation and prevented 'Umar ibn al-Khattab from killing him?

We have not found anything indicating the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, approved of this dialogue, but Ibn al-Qayyim and Ibn Atiyyah mentioned parts of it. Jurists have discussed the validity of such statements. Al-Mardawi, Al-Buhuti, and Al-Ruhaibani stated that one who swears by divorce or otherwise that he loves fitna (strife/temptation) and dislikes the truth does not break his oath if he means that he loves wealth and children and dislikes death. We emphasize that Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was among the most knowledgeable and understanding of the Companions.
