The answer

The Kaaba was demolished in the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah) and the Quraysh rebuilt it. Then, during the time of Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), it was demolished again after the people of Syria struck it with a trebuchet. Ibn al-Zubayr consulted the people about demolishing it, then he demolished it and rebuilt it. He added five cubits from the Hijr (the semi-circular wall) and made two doors for it, one for entry and the other for exit. When Ibn al-Zubayr was killed, Al-Hajjaj rebuilt it to its original state before Ibn al-Zubayr's addition to the Hijr and closed the other door. Al-Hafiz mentioned in Al-Fath that Ibn al-Zubayr followed the foundations of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) during the construction.
