The answer

The Kaaba was demolished twice after the advent of Islam. The first time was when Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr rebuilt it according to what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, desired, and this was after it had burned down during the time of Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah. The second time was when al-Hajjaj demolished it after his conquest of Mecca and restored it to its state before Ibn al-Zubayr's construction, by order of Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan. Ibn al-Mansur al-Mahdi intended to rebuild it according to Ibn al-Zubayr's construction, but Imam Malik ibn Anas dissuaded him, disliking the idea that caliphs would use it as a plaything.
