The answer

Ibn al-Jawzi mentioned that the souls of believers meet, citing as evidence a hadith about the souls of believers receiving the soul of a newcomer and asking it about the people of the world. This hadith is authentic. However, sending greetings with the deceased to the dead was not from the guidance of the Salaf. It is better to follow their guidance by supplicating and seeking forgiveness for the dead and giving charity on their behalf. Furthermore, burdening a dying person with conveying greetings might distract them from focusing on monotheism (Tawhid).
