If a pilgrim performs Hajj as a Mutamatti' (one who performs 'Umrah then Hajj), but does not reach Makkah until the Day of Tarwiyah, shortly before Dhuhr, should he complete his 'Umrah and then depart for Mina, or should he combine Hajj with 'Umrah, thus becoming a Qarin (one who performs 'Umrah and Hajj together), and depart directly for Mina?

Enjoying Hajj (al-tamattu') is not obligatory; rather, it is one of the three types of rituals (al-tamattu', al-ifrad (definition), and al-qiran (definition)), all of which are valid. Al-tamattu' is considered the best according to the Hanbalis, and it means performing 'Umrah (definition) and Hajj in a single journey with a period of desacralization between the 'Umrah and the ihram (definition) for Hajj. Whoever enters ihram for tamattu' and arrives on the Day of Tarwiyah should complete their 'Umrah and then proceed to Mina. They may also combine Hajj with 'Umrah, thereby becoming a qarin, provided they intend to do so before the tawaf (definition) of 'Umrah. Some scholars, such as Ibn Hazm al-Zahiri, have held that tamattu' is obligatory for those who have not brought a sacrificial animal (hady), in which case they must change their intention to an 'Umrah, desacralize from it, and then enter ihram for Hajj as an 'ifrad. However, the majority of scholars disagree with this view.
