The answer

It is legislated for the traveler to shorten the four-rak'ah prayers if his journey is permissible and not less than 83 kilometers after passing the houses of his village. He is allowed to shorten prayers during his journey and his return, in addition to the three days he stays in the city of work, because what terminates the travel status is a stay of four full days, excluding the day of arrival and the day of departure. And since shortening prayers is legislated, it is permissible to combine prayers that share a time (Dhuhr with Asr, and Maghrib with Isha) either by bringing forward or delaying.
