Is it permissible to pray for one who committed suicide, and is it obligatory to offer condolences for him?

The prayer (Janazah) is obligatory for a person who commits suicide, just like any other Muslim. However, the ruler (wali al-amr) may choose not to pray over him as a deterrent against such an act. It is permissible to offer condolences to the family of the suicide victim, because their affliction may be greater than others, and their deceased died as a disobedient Muslim. It is mentioned in the Hadith that whoever consoles his brother in his affliction, Allah will clothe him with garments of honor on the Day of Resurrection. Scholars have permitted offering condolences to a Muslim for the death of a disbeliever, so offering condolences to the family of a disobedient Muslim is even more appropriate.
