What is the ruling on delaying Fajr prayer past its time unintentionally?

Scholars have agreed upon the obligation of performing prayer within its prescribed time, based on Allah's saying: "Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times." There is no excuse for deliberately delaying it. However, delaying it is excused for a legitimate reason such as sleep, forgetfulness, or coercion. In such cases, it must be made up after the removal of the excuse, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him pray it when he remembers it; there is no expiation for it except that." There is no negligence in sleep; rather, negligence is in wakefulness. A Muslim must not be complacent in performing prayer due to excuses of work or tiredness; instead, he must observe it at its proper time, as Allah Almighty commanded: "Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient."
