What is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding reading the Noble Qur'an?

The guidance of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, in dealing with the Quran was to act upon it, embody its morals, and invite others to it. As for his guidance in its recitation, he would recite it with tartil (slow, melodious recitation) and interpretation, seek refuge in Allah before reciting, love to hear it from others, and become humble and weep upon hearing it. He would recite the Quran in all states except janabah (major ritual impurity), and he would chant it and sometimes vary his voice.

The etiquette of Quranic recitation includes purity (taharah), using a siwak (tooth-stick), and frequent recitation from the Mushaf (physical copy of the Quran) while being in a state of purity when touching it. It is recommended to interrupt recitation when passing wind or yawning, to prostrate at verses of prostration (ayat al-sajdah), and to face the Qiblah. The reciter should recite with solemnity, contemplate, and reflect, asking Allah for mercy at verses that mention it, seeking refuge from punishment at verses that mention it, glorifying Allah at verses of His transcendence, and interrupting recitation when drowsy. The people of the Quran should hold themselves accountable after recitation to ensure they act upon the Quran.
