What is the ruling on one who recites the Qur'an without contemplation or understanding?
The reciter of the Quran should strive to understand and ponder over it during recitation, for this is the intended purpose, by which breasts are expanded and hearts are illuminated, as Allah the Almighty said: (Do they not then ponder over the Quran?) and (A Book which We have sent down to you, full of blessings, that they may ponder over its verses). Among what aids in pondering is reading concise tafsirs like those of Ibn Kathir and Al-Sa'di. And whoever recites the Quran without pondering is not sinful and receives the reward of recitation, but he deprives himself of benefit. One who does not ponder should strive and take the means of pondering, such as knowing the meanings and reciting away from distractions.
