The question

What is the authenticity of reciting specific Surahs—Ya-Sin, An-Naba, Al-Fath, Al-Waqi'ah, and Al-Mulk—after the obligatory prayers, and the belief that they are the "deliverers" and suffice for the rest of the Qur'an?

The answer

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, encouraged the recitation of the Quran and clarified the immense reward for its reciter and practitioner. Authentic narrations have been reported regarding the virtues of certain surahs and verses, such as Surat Al-Baqarah, Al-Fatihah, Al-Mu'awwidhat (Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Nas), Ayat Al-Kursy, and the concluding verses of Surat Al-Baqarah. As for Surat Al-Mulk, an authentic hadith states regarding its virtue: "It is the preventer; it is the savior; it saves him from the punishment of the grave." Another hadith states: "Indeed, a surah from the Quran of thirty verses interceded for a man until he was forgiven, and it is 'Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion.'"

However, regarding Surat Ya-Sin, nothing authentic has been reported concerning its virtues; rather, only weak or fabricated narrations exist. Similarly, no authentic hadith has been reported concerning the virtue of Surat An-Naba', or Surat Al-Fath, or Surat Al-Waqi'ah. Specifying a particular time for reciting surahs without authentic proof is a reprehensible innovation (bid'ah), because acts of worship are based on divine command and prohibition.
