What is the wisdom behind forbidding gold and silk for men?

Some scholars have stated that the wisdom behind prohibiting gold and silk for men is to prevent them from falling into arrogance and extravagance, and from acquiring blameworthy female characteristics according to Islamic law. The apparent wearing of these items influences the inner self, and gold and silk instill in the heart the characteristics of women and those who boast and are arrogant. However, wearing silk is permitted in war to intimidate the enemy, and gold is permitted for women due to their need to adorn themselves for their husbands. Conversely, the prohibition of using gold and silver utensils applies to both men and women due to the pride and arrogance they entail and the breaking of the hearts of the poor.
