The iddah (waiting period) is obligatory for a divorced woman with whom the marriage was consummated—whether the divorce is revocable or irrevocable. For a pregnant woman, her iddah ends upon delivery. The woman observing iddah must remain in her home and not leave it except out of necessity, and she must return to sleep there. A woman divorced with a revocable divorce must observe her iddah in the marital home, unless there is a legitimate شرعي impediment. If the obligation of iddah arises for a woman while she is in her family's home, then if she left her husband's home without his permission, she must return to complete her iddah there. However, if she left with his permission, or he granted her permission afterward, then she observes her iddah in her family's home.
