Do Sunnah prayers compensate for missed obligatory prayers, or must missed obligatory prayers be made up in addition to Sunnah prayers?
The first thing a servant will be held accountable for on the Day of Resurrection is prayer. If there is any deficiency in it, Allah will complete it from the servant's voluntary prayers. This is because Allah has not enjoined an obligatory act of worship without also providing a voluntary act of the same kind to compensate for any shortcomings therein. The completion of an obligatory prayer through a voluntary one for a deficiency is established. However, making up for missed supererogatory prayers is not obligatory. It is obligatory to make up for missed obligatory prayers after reaching puberty for whoever reached the age of accountability before the age of twelve, and this is the view of the majority of scholars.
