Does the Hadith, "Look at the prayer of My servant, whether he completed it or was deficient in it. If it was deficient, He says: Complete for My servant his obligatory prayer from his voluntary prayers," mean that the Sunnah and supererogatory prayers compensate for missed obligatory prayers?

The first thing a servant will be held accountable for on the Day of Judgment is prayer (Salah). If there is any deficiency in it, Allah will look to see if His servant has voluntary (nafl) prayers, from which the deficiency in the obligatory (fard) prayer will be completed. Scholars have differed on the meaning of "completion." Some are of the view that it completes what was deficient in the manner of prayer, while others believe it completes prayers that were missed due to forgetfulness or oversight. Still others hold that it includes completing obligatory prayers that were intentionally left. Ibn Hazm is of the view that whoever intentionally abandons prayer cannot make it up, but rather completes it with voluntary prayers, with the condition of repentance first. The more cautious approach is to make up for missed prayers.
