The answer

It is not religiously forbidden for a family to designate a private plot of land as their own cemetery. However, the preferable and most complete way is for a Muslim to be buried in the general Muslim cemetery. This is consistent with the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the practice of the Companions and their successors, as evidenced by the Prophet's (peace be upon him) burying his Companions in Al-Baqi'. Furthermore, it is more beneficial for both the deceased and their family, as the deceased benefits from the numerous prayers offered for them by visitors to the cemetery, and the living benefit from visiting the public cemetery, which strengthens brotherhood through praying for all deceased Muslims.
