Am I obligated to divorce my wife through Khul' if she files a lawsuit requesting it from the court and wishes to return what I gave her, or do I have the right to refuse that out of adherence to her, and what must I do to complete the marriage, and what is required of her?

It is not permissible for a wife to seek divorce or annulment (khul') without a legitimate reason, such as the husband's injustice or her inability to fulfill his rights, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Any woman who asks her husband for divorce without any sound reason, the scent of Paradise will be forbidden to her," and "The women who seek khul' are the hypocrites." However, if there is a legitimate reason, there is no harm, and it is recommended for the husband to respond. It is not obligatory for the husband to accept a divorce or khul', but it is recommended. The judge has the right to annul the marriage in the presence of certain defects or if it is proven that the wife is harmed by remaining with the husband. If the husband does not wish to divorce her, he can seek the mediation of religious scholars for reconciliation. If the wife insists on divorce, Allah will compensate him with something better, for Allah Almighty says: "But if they separate [by divorce], Allah will enrich each of them from His abundance."
