How was alcohol forbidden in Islam?

Alcohol was prohibited by the that of the Quran, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus. Its prohibition was gradual. The verse in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:219) began by instilling aversion to it. Then, the verse in Surah An-Nisa (4:43) forbade prayer while intoxicated. Finally, the verse in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:90) explicitly prohibited it, associating it with idols and divining arrows, describing it as an abomination and a work of Satan, commanding its avoidance, and linking this to success.

The Sunnah affirmed its prohibition, stating that every intoxicant is Khamr (alcohol) and forbidden, and that a drinker of alcohol is not a believer at the time of drinking it. The drinker of alcohol and everyone involved with it are cursed.

Alcohol is harmful to the individual, society, and the family.
