Is it permissible to allow students to play football or other sports in the halls of the mosque, away from the main prayer hall, without disturbing or preventing worship? And is hitting the ball against the wall a sin, or is it forbidden to hit the ball forcefully against the wall?

The rulings concerning mosques summarize the prohibition of idle talk and frivolous activities within them, as they were built for remembrance (dhikr), prayer, and the teaching of knowledge.

Allah has commanded that they be elevated and purified from defilement, and they are to be protected from idle talk and raising voices.

Based on this, rooms attached to a mosque fall into two categories:

1. If they are part of the mosque: Play and idle talk are forbidden therein, because the mosque was not built for such purposes. An exception is made for minor permissible play and joking intended to relieve boredom, provided it does not disturb the worshippers. As for the Abyssinians' playing with spears in the mosque, it was a specific concession for training for jihad and what aids it, on condition that it does not harm the mosque or disturb the worshippers.

2. If they are separate from the mosque: They do not take the ruling of the mosque. Rather, the ruling of the mosque applies only to the place designated for prayer. In this case, there is no harm in allowing some sports activities therein if there is no damage to the facilities or the occupants. It is recommended to build comprehensive Islamic centers that meet the various needs of Muslims, including places for permissible entertainment and beneficial sports.
