The question

What should we do with our adult daughter who wears the hijab reluctantly, prefers schools that prohibit the hijab over those that permit it but have a weak educational level, and cries when she is not allowed to take it off in front of her maternal cousins?

The answer

A girl is obligated to wear the hijab immediately upon reaching puberty, and it is not permissible for her to abandon the hijab or wear anything that contradicts its Islamic conditions. Emphasis should be placed on instilling in the daughter's understanding the belief that what Allah has decreed must not be defied. Allah Almighty says: "It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error." Furthermore, the daughter must respond to her Lord's command to wear the hijab and conceal her adornment. The family's residence in non-Islamic countries may be a reason for the absence of these concepts. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade residing in lands of disbelief except under certain conditions.
