Does a divorce occur with the saying, "You are divorced, divorced, divorced" all at once after a heated argument?

If a man says to his wife: "You are divorced, divorced, divorced," and he intended three divorces, then three divorces occur. However, if he intended one divorce, or did not intend anything, then it counts as a single divorce, because repetition of words can be for emphasis, as in the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Her marriage is invalid, her marriage is invalid, her marriage is invalid."

So, if he intended one divorce or did not intend anything, it is a single divorce, and he may take his wife back as long as she is within her waiting period (iddah). But if he intended three divorces, then three divorces occur, and his wife becomes irrevocably divorced from him, meaning she is not lawful for him until she marries another man and he consummates the marriage with her and then divorces her. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah held the view that pronouncing three divorces at once counts as a single divorce.
