Do three divorces occur when uttering the phrase "You are divorced" three times in a state of anger, knowing that reconciliation has already taken place between the spouses?

If a man says to his wife, "You are divorced, you are divorced, you are divorced," if he intended the second and third pronouncements as an affirmation of the first divorce, then only one divorce has occurred. However, if he intended to initiate a new divorce with each pronouncement, then three divorces have occurred. This is the view of the majority of scholars.

Therefore, if you intended to establish a new divorce with your pronouncement, your wife has become irrevocably divorced from you (baynunah kubra), and she is not lawful for you until she marries another man. But if you intended affirmation, then the divorce is revocable, and you may take her back during her waiting period (iddah). Shaykh al-Islam and those who followed him held the view that only one revocable divorce occurs with multiple pronouncements using a single لفظ (wording) or in a single sitting.
